CONGRATULATIONS TO TEAM LAGUNA FOR A SUCCESSFUL EVENT! MABUHAY ANG PHILIPPINE FINGERBOARD SCENE!

Tuesday, August 3, 2010

On Focus: Bike Vergara

Creative, humble, supportive, and persistent. Four words that i can closely relate to Bike, or most commonly known as hithitman. From his love for the fingerboard scene, to his lifestlye, and to his worldview, this man has what it takes to help the philippine fingerboarding reach its full potential. Here is a simple talk i had with the man behind Dirty Fingerboards.

FbPh:

Introduce yourself.

Bike:

im bike, 28, did not finish nursing, im on my 4th year, been playing
fingerboards since 08, been makin them 09, i play football, airsoft, im a
frustrated skater. have a 2 yr old son, hes turning 3

FbPh:

what triggered you to buy your first fingerboard? i mean how did you
start it.

Bike:

my classm8 bought 1, borrowed it and never returned. then i bought more
for the whole class (laughs)

FbPh:

we should thank your classmate then. how did you start dfb?

Bike:

yeah, his name is vance, he's a really close friend.i was a collector of
berlinwoods, yellwoods, finga, everything, back then fingerboards costs 2.5k
minimum, just for the deck, no one could afford so i started makin them and
sold it for cheap price. studied every angle of it, every brand has its ups and
downs, improved their good points and left the bad ones, then i started using
my own brand. medyo matagal bago ko ginamit sarili kong produkto. i was a
berlinwood lover back then. my fav shape was the berlinwood wide flat concave.
would you like to see my collection back then?

i got videos.

FbPh:

we would love to, bike. put on the links.

Bike:

Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSgH67C1Zak

this is my gf's account, all vids are mine. im not planning to pursue any
career, i dedicate my life to fingerboarding.

the graphic boardstein deck was 9k. just the deck

FbPh:

that's some dedication right there man. can you give the boardstein deck
to me? (laughs)

Bike:

sold it already

FbPh:

im just curious on how did you make those decks knowing that youre
studying nursing.

Bike:

mahilig ako mag create ng things. specially little ones

FbPh:

so that;s why.

we dont want to go into those deck making details because we know that
its top secret. haha.

Bike:

Ngapala, u like your deck? i forgot to include tunings nextime nlang
kasama ng wheels

FbPh:

sure sir. not a problem. im really thankful sa pagtulong mo sa scene

Bike:

this american guy bought this deck and a used 1 for $250. ganun presyo
dati. ngayon mura nlang. yellowoods are crazy rare back then.

FbPh:

i saw yellowoods before when they are just starting sa FFI

Bike:

i have an FFI account

FbPh:

yeah?

Bike:

akala ko dati ako lang nag fifinger board

FbPh:

i was checking that site almost everyday before. and i was just like awestricken
with their set ups. but my biggest problem was how to buy them. pano mo nabili
yan?

Bike:

ako din, ang taga bili ko dati yung uncle ko sa states. pinag aralan ko
din mabuti pano ko makukuha lahat ng items para sa maraming maraming pinoy

FbPh:

why are you so unselfish when it comes to fingerboard related things? is
that bike in real life, too?

Bike:

its like a long term plan, i cant just give away fingerboards, i too
need some money to live, yes im making a little bit of money with fingerboards,
but only to support my family. hinndi din talaga ako madamot (laughs) and i
trust fingerboarders.

FbPh:

how long have you been into the fingerboard scene? how did you make your
connections and eventually started a forum?

Bike:

wla pa ko 3 years, akala ko dati ako lang mag isa naglalaro sa
pilipinas, so i joined FFI, and then erick (livingnostalgic) invited me to
manila to attend a weekly sesh

the first pinoy forum was TAPFB. the pinoy fingerboard forum. i adviced gary the asshole to make a forum, then he kicked me out and he started his own company

then my cousin made me a forum. its the start of confisk8s.

the regular weekly sesh in manila sucked. its under a religious bullshit. full of emos. my
connections abroad grew when i joined FFI.
dirtyFB has 3 foreign riders.
1 from u.s. 1 from australia .
and a girl from Canada.
local connections? thanks to confisk8s

FbPh:

and now everybody is like going crazy with Dirty! why did you call your
fingerboard company Dirty in the first place?

Bike:

the first metal mold i used was just regular steel, it stained every
deck i made, it looked dirty, and i was thinking of a dirtyfinger logo, lol,
now my mold is stainless steel, so i really cherish clean blanks.

this topic became an issue in FFI when i was just starting, big names
commented on my brand name, jerome verony, mike scnider, redemption, justin
(owner of homewood)
haha

at first they say my decks were really nice but they hate the name, now
it stuck to them

can u comment on my brandname? what do you think about dirtyFB?

FbPh:

with the brandname, anything goes to me. at first it will just sound
odd, but when you get used to it, the name is as rad as the decks

FbPh:

dirtFb decks are awesome since it is made by a Filipino. bottom line.

what are your plans on the fingerboard scene we have here? any plans on
making wheels and fingerboard tapes?

Bike:

now im making my webstore, but still not sure about what payment method
to use. i would still donate fingerboards for tourney prizes and stuff

kaw naman tanungin ko, dru told me you are the maker of daliriFB,
hehehe, how do u see dirtyFB?

FbPh:

im not the maker of DaliriFb, it is my good friend Jerico.

we started it because we want to have a wooden board. that's just simply
it, we use cheap wood and resin. and a cement mold that breaks from time to
time

Bike:

ooooh, madami din ako kilala na gumagawa, but for personal use only

FbPh:

we sold it because others want it. 200php

Bike:

ahhh, cant sell dFB that low, wish ko lang mapa baba ko pa price, mahal
din kasi lahat

FbPh:

we just made the decks out of our own preference. hindi kami nakakita ng
magandang decks, we just made our own.

Bike:

coool, ok naman eh, i saw 3 pcs with dru. medyo manipis at mahaba ng
konti, hehehe

FbPh:

mahaba siya hahaha. kasi we never had decks like berlinwood on our hands

Bike:

i make money when im exporting decks to other countries. 500 is only
special offer for pinoys. i sell them for $20 to webstores

FbPh:

that's what im talking about. you desreve it. the decks deserve it.

Bike:

yeah, heres the problem, i cant supply enough decks for pinoys, so no
dFB left for export, now im losing money instead of earning. but i prefer to
sell to pinoys rather than export them. for the scene diba

FbPh:

why dont you first export it? then the remains go sa AMIN. we wont mind.
i wont mind hahaha

Bike:

thats not the way i do it, pag madami ako decks, dinadala ko sa manila,
tapos papapiliin ko pa mga pinoy, yung mga matira, yun ang ine-export

anong sabi pala ng mga friends mo sa dFB mo?

they like it?

FbPh:

yeah. and the FBS tape too haha. now i am just saving money for the
wheels and all other stuff

Bike:

FBS medjo mahal ang benta ko. kasi mahirap kausap yung binibilihan ko
nyan. wheels would really make a difference

FbPh:

YES!

Bike:

sa umpisa napaka hirap catch. kasi ang bilis. may compi sa sat. yung sa
team laguna

FbPh:

oo nga e. i'll save money for the november nationals. i need exact dates
para maka save sa plane fare

Bike:

yun ang masakit

FbPh:

we will also have a compe on september sa la salle

Bike:

Cool. may cousin ako from lasalle. he has dFBs. but i think hes not into
it nowadays.

FbPh:

you can send me some stuff so i can sell it.

Bike:

cge, right now, im out of wood and behind na sa mga orders, cguro
nextmonth marami na ulit.

(WE TOOK A BREAK…)

Bike:

hmmmm, ano pa ba magandang tanong?

FbPh:

i forgot hahah i had that a while ago (laughs)

Bike:

im really frustrated practicing nollieflip out

FbPh:

try it on nosegrinds

Bike:

yun nga eh, cant nail it

FbPh:

dfbs are perfect for switch and nollie flips. find the sweet spot. for
me it is on the concave before the tail. sa may bump.

Bike:

i think the problem is in my finger motion. damn hirap. ndi ko pa
nagagawa kahit once.

FbPh:

dont move your finger that much. konting kick lang haha

Bike:

have u seen ryan petries vid?

FbPh:

nah. Gimme the link.

Bike:

galing ng nollieflip out. wait il look 4 it

Bike:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCoR-OlEruk

hes australian, rides for dFB

FbPh:

i saw this one pala

Bike:

cool flip outs

FbPh:

you see he pops hard when doing nollie flips. he slides it real hard
then swipes the sweet spot

Bike:

haiz, sana
matutunan ko din yun

FbPh:

ikaw pa

Bike:

lol, ndi ako magaling, matyaga lang ako mag ulit ulit

FbPh:

i saw one time you did na nollie heel nosegrind and i cant do that

Bike:

it took me a million tries man, its so chamba

FbPh:

i tried it a millioin times too and i didnt nail it hahaha. just nollie
heels on flat no combos haha

Bike:

may dinagdag pa ko na vid ni niki, he's one of the fingerboarders i met
when i was starting, he was the 1st dFB rider

FbPh:

yung sa skateboard?

Bike:

sa kanya yang sk8park, jan sya nakatira. 2 tries lang. Ginising ko lang
siya to try my camera.

FbPh:

what the heck hahaha. my partner jerico skates well, too. He can do
kickflip 5-0s din pero frontside. i upped the vid on the forum

Bike:

ahhh, nakita ko na din. bilib ako sa mga skater na may flip to grinds

FbPh:

yeah. it takes a lot of guts and effort.

Bike:

nextime punta ko dun hel nail a flip bs tailslide. sabi nya. practisin
daw muna nya ng konti

FbPh:

we'll wait for that. (laughs)

so bike, do you use Dirty fingerboards in every set up or do you still
use other decks?

Bike:

it took me a while din before switching to my own brand. mga 1 year din
na gumagawa ako ng fingerboards and still using berlinwoods. sabi ko sa sarili
ko, parang nanloloko lang ako pag ndi ko ginamit sariling ginagawa ko. ngayon
wla na ko ibang favourite kundi dFB. Yeah!

FbPh:

you deserve it.

Bike:

onga pala, forgot to tell you, i can only make 2 decks maximum per day,
no more than that. im really aiming for quality. not quantity

FbPh:

its nice to know that im using a deck that is at par with berlinwoods
and other leading decks worldwide

Bike:

thanks tol, thats really nice to hear

FbPh:

you the man, bike. thanks nga pala for making me sa admin

Bike:

no need to thank me man, its like a job u got, and i have nothing to pay
you. im the one who should thank you

FbPh:

yung parang salamat sa trust at supporta

Bike:

no problem with that man

FbPh:

You really had very really nice stuff. now im getting more jealous with
those wheeeeeels

Bike:

(laughs)

there are like 6 wheel brands:

from best to worst: substance, flatface, nocomply, winkler, noliie, oakwheels
others sux a lot

FbPh:

grrrrrr. your just naming them and i am just dying just to have one

Bike:

lucky you, i bought them all just to try and rate them. now u know whats
best for free (laughs)

FbPh:

either way, i really need those wheels

Bike:

whats that song u used with your vid?

FbPh:

what vid?

Bike:

everyday im husling everyday im hustling. its stuck on my mind, it wont
stop playing

FbPh:

Bike:
